WHY  HIRE A TEMPORARY  FOREIGN WORKER?

  • Difficulty in attracting domestic workers for entry-level positions across all industries
  • Lack of skilled candidates in Canada
  • There is a high turnover rate for domestic entry-level workers, making it time-consuming and costly for employers
  • It is difficult to grow and expand the business when there are not enough workers
  • Temporary Foreign Workers are reliable and hardworking, and are less likely to leave the job

WHAT IS AN LMIA?

Before hiring a foreign worker to work at their business, most Canadian employers need to get a document called the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada.

A positive LMIA (sometimes called a confirmation letter) will show that there is a need for a temporary foreign worker to fill the position and that no Canadians or permanent residents are available to do the job. The positive LMIA letter permits Canadian employers to hire a temporary worker.

WHO NEEDS A LABOUR MARKET IMPACT ASSESSMENT (LMIA)?

Most employers need an LMIA before they can hire a temporary foreign worker. However, there are certain situations where an LMIA is not required.

LMIA exemption codes can be found on the Government of Canada website: Here's the link.
